"Last night I learned how to be a lover of God,
To live in this world and call nothing my own.
I looked inward And the beauty of my own emptiness Filled me till dawn." - Rumi, A Mine of Rubies
Last night i dozed to the sound of crickets chattering under a blood dusk sky
I dreamt of sensual delights and pyschedelic patterns
I looked inward and the beauty of my own creative impulse filled me til dawn
Last night i saw lovers in the streets, flitting and flirting like a summer breeze
They were playing nature's game; unselfconscious and seductive
I looked inward and a deep love of life filled me till dawn
Last night i saw the face of a child with night terrors
Twisted and torn by imagination's dark side
I looked inward and dared not look away till dawn
Last night i saw images of a Sudanese orphan
Gaunt and spent, wearing in his tiny body the hellish scars of global inhumanity
I looked inward and the frailty of my own brokenness filled me till dawn
On his last night Jesus sat with friends and enemies
They ate and spoke of days gone by; a hushed apprehension filled the room
They looked inward and fresh hope in the face of the bleakest loss filled them till dawn
They were learning how to be lovers of God
to live in the world and call nothing their own
They broke bread and celebrated their shared humanity
They filled cups and celebrated fulfilling love poured out
May you be a lover of God, open in the face of unending pain, alive to infinite life
May the beauty of your own humanity fill you morning, noon and night.
May bread and cup symbolize your inner world, your joys and tears, your dreams and visions, the pain of the world and the limitless potential for recreation.
May the fullness of life excite your imagination.
May the beauty of your inner emptiness fill you, now and always
Amen
