History

Christ Community Church has a long and exciting history. It's a history with many transitions and rebirths as it has responded to various changes in society. Each new building project signaled a growth stage in the church's evolution. Each new minister and staff member brought their own vision, and the long stream of talented and committed community members have created what exists today.

In 1870 the First Reformed Church of Spring Lake opened its doors for the first time; the vision of 16 Dutch immigrants. A new sanctuary was built in 1938. This building today serves as the parlor in the revamped complex. The 1938 church was considered a fine example of colonial architecture. The church was renamed Christ Community Church in 1971, less than a year after the new minister Richard Rhem returned. This signaled an important visionary shift to be deeply involved in the local community. The church grew out of the space they had been using; and so the current sanctuary was completed in 1978. The first service in the new sanctuary was televised by CBS on June 18, 1978.

In 1995 Christ Community Church split from the Reformed Church of America over the controversial issues of sexuality and universal grace. Again the community had evolved in its inclusive vision of all people being received and treated equally. Christ Community Church has gone from strength to strength since becoming independent of any denominational institution.

In 2004 a new minister arrived from Auckland, New Zealand. Ian Lawton, an Australian out of the Anglican tradition, succeeded Richard Rhem. This marked the next stage in the evolution of Christ Community as it explores 'Progressive Christianity' in Spring Lake and beyond.
