Like most of us Matthew lived with these conventions and the convenience of other people’s ideas. But the tragedies of daily life, the breakdown of relationships and the loss of faith within his communities awakened a poetic imagination. He used the shape and language of the Jewish Law they knew to push them beyond the Law into the arms of one who caressed the broken with compassion and grace.
